1. What is the maximum Radio Distance between the K9 Gate Type 1 , Type 2 and K9-GTS Controller Unit?
The radio link will work reliably to about 200 Meters (600 feet). This assumes a clear line-of-sight from the antenna within/ on the Gate to the antenna on the K9-GTS Controller – timer console.
To achieve best distance, ensure timer console antenna’s view of the IR Gate is not obstructed It is also recommended that other electronic devices ( PA system, etc.) be at least 1 meter( 3 feet) from the timer console.
If using the timer for racing or other events, place the timing console half way between start / finish Gates to ensure a max range from either IR Gate is 100 Meters (300 feet)
If greater range is required , please contact us.
2. What is the maximum distance between the IR-TX Gate and IR-RX Gate ( “optical range”)?
A. The K9-Gate Type 1 – 10 Sensor IR Gates – have an optical range or distance separation between the IR-TX and IR-RX gates. Depending the IR-TX Gate set IR Power level.
- IR-TX – Normal Power Level – min 1500mm – max 5000mm ( @5ft-15ft)
- (note: greater than 1500mm distance allows easier and constant alignment)
- IR-TX – High Power Level -min 5000mm -max 15000mm(@15ft – 45feet)
The best method to align the gates is to …………
- Setup the Transmit pole first , then align the receiver pole
- When setting up – make sure the gate is aligned with no drop outs for a period of about 2min to ensure a stable alignment
B. The K9-Gate Type 2 – single / dual beam Gates – have an optical range or distance separation between the IR-TX and IR-RX gates. Depending the IR-TX Gate set IR Power level.
- IR-TX – Normal Power Level – min 600mm – max 5000mm ( @2ft-15ft)
- IR-TX – High Power Level -min 5000mm -max 15000mm(@15ft – 45feet)
2a. Why a minimum optical distance range for gates?
Because the IR level output from the IR-TX gate can saturate the IR RX gate receiver when the separation distance is too small and this effects the responsiveness of a trigger of the IR-RX gate
The multi sensor array on the pole allows for changes in height( when pole vertical ) of animals, without the need to constantly change and align a single beam gate.
When pole is placed horizontally , it allows for specific trigger points , with out having to move the sensor gate and re-align.
3. Does sun affect the IR Gates?
A late afternoon or early morning sun, shining directly into the face of the receiving gate (IR-RX) will affect the maximum optic range between the gates. Like humans it hard to look directly into a rising or setting sun without a visor or some sort . The IR-RX has to fight the same problem.
The simple solution is swap the electric eyes so that the IR-RX gate is not facing into the Rising and Setting sun.
If this is not possible, then placing any sort shield that places the IR-RX gate in shadow helps the IR-RX Gate “see.”. Even when facing into the sun, you may not experience any problems unless you have a large distance between the IR-TX and IR-RX gates (e.g.,Gate Type 1 – over 3 meter( 9feet) or Type 2 – over 35 meters( 100 feet).
4. Are the K9-GTS Controller, Gates, and Hand-Switch components weatherproof?
No. The equipment should not be left out in the weather. It is best to store them in a temperature and humidity controlled environment such as your house when not in use.
If it is raining during an event and you wish to continue running, both the Type 1 and Type 2 Gates are water resistant, however, when used in the rain, wipe off excess water before laying them back in the carrying bag/case or removing the batteries.
The K9-GTS Controller is best kept dry but if need to be used in rain , should be placed in to snap lock bag with a rubber band to hold it in place and continue operation.
5. How Long does the Battery power last?
K9 Controller Unit
Fully recharged with the supplied 3400maH batteries the controller will operate upto 48hours in constant use
A low bat level will show when 50% or less power remains , typically 1 hours prior to shutdown
K9 Gate –Type 1 – IR-TX
Fully recharged with the supplied 3400maH batteries will last:
- On Normal IR power mode – 24hours constant use
- On High IR power Mode 12 hours Constant use
K9 Gate –Type 1 – IR-RX
Fully recharged with the supplied 3400maH batteries will last 72 hours constant use.
K9 Handswitch – Fully recharged with the supplied
- 2 x LIR2477 is 48 hours – constant use before recharge requires
- 2 x CR2477 is 100hours – constant use before replacement
All devices have battery low warning system in place as well as when added to the the K9 controller will alert to low power of each
6. Can Split Times using multiple gates be done?
Yes , split times over course can be done ,with up to 6 RF gates that allowed into the system.
7. What Horn Outputs options are supported?
The K9 controller supports 2 types of horn outputs:
A. Relay output – the 2.1,mm Connector has a 12v battery connected directly to a horn and the relay internal of the K9 controller completes the circuit when triggered and sounds the horn – the horn relay supports up to max 10amp as 30vdc – refer user reference manual for further details.
B. Sound Output – 3.1mm stereo jack connects to a PA system and speakers and a horn sound is played , there are 2 output levels for this sound for the PA system connection:
- Line level – such as CD or Tape player input level.
- Mic Level – (unbalanced ) where the output is 100 times less than line level and can be connected to a mic input on the PA system.

K9 Timer has an internal self calibration system
The K9-GTS system uses the RF Frequency of 2.400GHz – 2.500Ghz. The signal level is such that it complies with low-level output that does not require a license to operate in the USA, Australia, UK. Frequencies in this range may be used by other devices and, as such, changing the selected channel can obtain increased distance range.
The K9-GTS is designed to be a portable system to be used outside for the duration of events. It is not intended that the system will be exposed to the elements on fixed, permanent nature. If there is a requirement to mount the unit(s) outside on a fixed, permanent location, please contact Supplier for advice on how best to achieve this.
The K9-GTS System uses batteries and, as such, care when transporting using airfreight is required.
